Asteroid 2012 DA14 – ETA: February 16, 2013
To avert a new apocalypse – this time set for February 2013 – scientists suggest confronting asteroid 2012 DA14 with either paint, or big guns. The tough part of either scheme is that time has long run out to build a spaceship for any operation.

NASA confirms the 60-meter (197-feet) asteroid, spotted by Spanish stargazers in February, has a good chance of colliding with Earth in eleven months.
The rock’s closest approach to the planet is scheduled for February 15, 2013, when the distance between the planet and space wanderer will be under 27,000 km (16,700 miles). This is lower than the geosynchronous orbit kept by the Google Maps satellite.
With the asteroid zooming that low, it will be too late to do anything with it besides trying to predict its final destination and the consequences of impact.
A spaceship is needed, experts agree. It could shoot the rock down or just crash into it, either breaking the asteroid into debris or throwing it off course.
“We could paint it,” says NASA expert David Dunham.
Paint would affect the asteroid’s ability to reflect sunlight, changing its temperature and altering its spin. The asteroid would stalk off its current course, but this could also make the boulder even more dangerous when it comes back in 2056, Aleksandr Devaytkin, the head of the observatory in Russia’s Pulkovo, told Izvestia.
Whatever the mission, building a spaceship to deal with 2012 DA14 will take two years – at least.

The asteroid has proven a bitter discovery. It has been circling in orbit for three years already, crossing Earth’s path several times, says space analyst Sergey Naroenkov from the Russian Academy of Sciences. It seems that spotting danger from outer space is still the area where mere chance reigns, while asteroid defense systems exist only in drafts.
Still, prospects of meeting 2012 DA14 are not all doom and gloom.
“The asteroid may split into pieces entering the atmosphere. In this case, most part of it will never reach the planet’s surface,” remarks Dunham.
But if the entire asteroid is to crash into the planet, the impact will be as hard as in the Tunguska blast, which in 1908 knocked down trees over a total area of 2,150 sq km (830 sq miles) in Siberia. This is almost the size of Luxembourg. In today’s case, the destination of the asteroid is yet to be determined.

Phase 1: would have to involve determining the asteroids composition before any plans could be made to deflect it, this could be done though radiation mapping (ie X-ray), or through a lander probe, but most likely the first option (less cost and same overall results). Phase 2: would be the designing of countermeasures based on composition, the reason that composition is key is because asteroids have different ratings in porosity, metallic content, silica content and solid rock content, all of these have different effects on what will effect the asteroid or not, if it is porous, an explosion will have no effect as the force would be absorbed and negated. If the asteroid is mainly metallic an explosion could have little to no effect and could also simply break the asteroid in many dangerous falling objects rather than one, the most optimal result is an explosion against a rock asteroid as it will disintegrate it in space and most remains would burn up in the atmosphere. Phase 3: is enacting plan A and keeping other plans on the bench in case of A’s failure.
I don’t think however that it would take 2 years to get something into space to deflect it, if the world was in genuine danger the bureaucracy would be over stepped, no government wants to be responsible for inaction resulting in the deaths of millions, it would borderline crimes against humanity. Im still waiting to hear more on this as it develops but the section above is the basic course of action im sure they would take

Not long ago, there was an article about people who “remote viewed” an asteroid impact in 2013. Now this. Very eerie!
I wonder what the effect would be if this asteroid is to crash into the ocean. It’s not that huge (197 feet), but I would imagine if it was to crash into the ocean at full speed, it would create a huge tsunami wave.
It will hit but no one will see it coming as the skies will be blackened from smoke. Not astrologers, not govt, no one will see it coming until the earth quivers and the aftermath comes.

actually it looks like it will miss us. I’m sorry to disapoint Maree but evidently it has already been seen….by astrologers, calm down, take it all in ppl. Yes times are changing, but its not the end, just time to wake up!

As others have said, remember elenin, Nibiru, red dwarf, etc. If we keep crying wolf everytime a rock flies by eventually no one will take anything seriously. Yes, something will hit us eventually. The book of revelation tells of a “mountain” sized object impacting the earth, destroying one third of sea life, trees, etc. (not to mention human toll). As to when this happens, who knows. Next week. next month, next year, ten years, etc. It will happen. And the prophecy seems to imply we weren’t able to do anything about it. And it won’t end up like in the movies Deep Impact or Armmageddon. It will be devastating. Millions or billions will probably die from impact and aftermath. just my opinion but i think it will be this event, along with wars, that will trigger the big movement towards the “new world order” as earth struggles to maintain any semblance of order. Also, the “disappearance” of millions of people will rather add to the panic, I think. This might be when these alledged fema camps might come into play here in the usa. Add in some solar flares, incredible earth(and i mean EARTH)quakes, perhaps some visitors who appear without going through nor immigration protocol, and i think you can anticipate a good time had by all. so scary, or is this story like the rest of the old ones that also came so true… we are people, not gods we know nothing but what is before us, physically here on earth we put math together to make sense out of thoughts more or less. but quantum mechanics is and belongs to, prob not us, but of a more intelligent arhcheotype, so again be open minded dont let one fact prove the reality of our reality a fact…theres a reason we dont know life.. or why or how we’re here, imagination can take us where, we want to go….

the likely hood of this particular astroid slamming into earth at high speed is around 1 in a million,so far then again it has to be coming through the keyhole earth approach,which means high speed,minimum drag,etc slamming into earth,no there is more junk,debris in our solar neighbourhood that is consirded more likely to slam into earth that people are not aware of,the question is what is it?how large is it?where is it?and what are the risks factors?there are a heck of a lot of possible canidates to list them all here,is how long is a piece of string?i adopt a more conservative approach ok we got some debris,junk in our solar neighbour hood lets see how close they coming to earth,in future,and the 1s that we cant see which come out of the blue like this 1,lets see what happens when it gets closer then decide,what threat it poses?

This could take out one of more satellites and the junk and debris from the hit could end up taking out many more satellites very soon after that. All the satellite collision probability will go way up if even one is hit. The velocity that the parts would go to would make them missiles that would start targeting a chain reaction this would not be good.
Most all will be watching this one and pray it goes by us with out a hit. Every Scientist alive will be watching this event. Many will be in Florida for a very special viewing of the once in a Lifetime Event. Professors, Scientist, World Leaders, Ham Radio Operators and Every Astronomer will have its eyes on This Event, along with almost every TV set on Earth.
“2012 DA14″ goes by Earth twice a year and there is no way anyone for sure can tell how close the second pass will be till it passes by the Moon and Earth and the GRAVITATIONAL FORCE effect that it will have on this Asteroid.
They may come close but this one is already coming very close to begin with. Too close this time or on its second or 3rd pass? Ad a Meteor Shower like the 13 and 14 of December of this year, it might go through or bump into one of them? Or all the other orbital debris like Spent Rocket Boosters left in space that can no longer be moved by a control center on Earth.

2012 XM16, 2012 XM55, 2012 XP55, THERE ARE OVER 25 found just this year 2012 that are part of the Near Earth Object Program that will come close to Earth from now till 2012 DA14 comes.
You do not want to know how many are on the “PLANETARY DEFENSE” list.
